Yves van de Peer, a Ghent University professor, and Western Bioinformatics adjunct professor, centre, is pictured with an international team, led by Western Biology professor Mike Grbic, at the 3rd Spider Mite International Meeting. Team members include groups from Canada, the United States, Belgium, Holland, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, France and Chile.

Yves van de Peer explores the newest biological frontier at its intersection with computer science, statistics, mathematics and genetics to develop new approaches in the area of bioinformatics that will aid in the analysis of complex genomes. The Western Bioinformatics adjunct professor will deliver his special seminar, Bioinformatics in the post-genomic era: New approaches to analyze complex genomes, at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in Chemistry Building, Room 9.

Van de Peer has a long-term collaboration with Biology professor Mike Grbic's laboratory at Western working on the genome sequencing and analysis of first chelicerate pest genome (spidermite.org).

Van de Peer has published more than 300 research papers, review articles and book chapters, and is associate editor of eight international journals. His work has been cited more than 25,000 times in literature; he is one of the most-cited European scientists.

Van de Peer obtained his PhD at the University of Antwerp, Belgium, in 1996. Currently, he is a full professor in Bioinformatics and Genome Biology at the Department of Plant Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Ghent University. He is also the VIB Group Leader at the Department of Plant Systems Biology at Ghent.  Van de Peer is leading a Bioinformatics and Systems Biology group, which consists of about 25 people. Recently, he was appointed as a part-time professor at the University of Pretoria, where he is setting up a joint lab.
