Who says the kids get to have all the fun?

Registration is now open for the 2014 Western Staff & Faculty Summer Games, an intramural-style, multi-sport league available to all staff and faculty on campus.

The league features six different sports played on campus from 4:30-5:30 p.m. every Thursday for six weeks. Individuals will be split into different teams each week, so everyone will play with – and against – a variety of players. Two six-week sessions will be offered. The first session runs May 22-June 26; the second runs July 10-Aug 14.

The registration fee for one session is $35 plus HST.

Visit shop.westernmustangs.ca and click on Register. Registration closes for the first session on May 15.

All abilities of play are welcome, however, keep in mind this is a fun, non-competitive league and the convenor will ensure we stick to the rules of fun and fair play, said Karmen Dowling, Annual Giving officer.

“We are a top employer and, to me, it makes sense we do something like this for our staff and faculty,” she said. “We have so many groups on campus helping push this. It has been great. We are offering something unique to anybody who works on campus.

“Come out, have fun, meet some new colleagues and get some exercise.”

Dowling helped spark the idea for the league when she was looking for organized sport activities for staff beyond events she was already organizing inside her External Department. Eventually, she connected with Guy Schultz, Intramural Sports program coordinator, and The Games were born.

Organizers say the non-competitive events are a perfect opportunity for those who want to be more active to have something organized, and conveniently at their place of work.

“Nobody has to be a superstar at any of the sports,” Dowling said. “Even if you don’t think you would be great at, say, soccer, even if you think there might be too much running, this is really about having fun more than being the top scorer. Anybody can play.”
