Western President Amit Chakma released the following statement regarding the Saturday release of Western University professor Dr. Tarek Loubani and York University professor John Greyson after seven weeks in an Egyptian prison.

On behalf of Western University, I want to express how pleased we are to learn that Dr. Tarek Loubani, an assistant professor in our Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, and John Greyson, a York University professor and filmmaker, have been released from prison in Egypt. The two men were arrested Aug. 16 and detained without formal charges being laid against them until their release Saturday.

We appreciate the efforts by the Canadian government to secure the release of Loubani and Greyson. I also want to say how proud I am of the members of Western’s community for their vigilance in maintaining a heightened awareness of the plight of these two men.

As friends and colleagues, we look forward to welcoming Dr. Loubani back to Western.
