Genevieve Fisher is up against one of the biggest names in country music, but that doesn’t faze the Don Wright Faculty of Music student. She is competing for Female Artist of the Year at the first edition of the Country Music Association of Ontario awards to be held May 27 at the Markham Theatre in Markham.

Fisher, who will play live at the event, is nominated in the same category as Crystal Shawanda, Kira Isabella, Libby McGrath, Lindi Ortega, Michelle Wright, Sarah Cripps, Tara Oram, Tonya Kennedy and Victoria Banks.

At age 20, Fisher is one of the Top 10 most-played Canadian country singers.

She was the featured Artist of the Month in November 2012 for the organization, and was chosen as one of eight to perform at the New Artist Showcase in Saskatoon for Canadian Country Music Week. She also sang the anthem at the London Knight’s home opener for more than 9,000 fans.

Juggling her studies at Western in Popular Music with her performing and songwriting, Fisher also recorded a new CD, Bad Enough, in Nashville, released last month. Her single, July, was on the national country charts for four weeks, and stayed in the Top 50 for almost three months. Also on the CD, Shut Down This Day, charted in the Top 50.
