A former postdoctoral fellow at Western is helping spearhead a new biomedical imaging program at Hebei University, China, thanks to a long-term relationship with Western researchers.

Professor Lixu Gu, a professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and adjunct professor at Hebei University, was a postdoctoral fellow with Terry Peters, Robarts imaging scientist, more than a decade ago. He returns to campus this week to establish a formal collaboration on a new biomedical imaging program at Hebei.

Professor Hongrui Wang, Hebei general secretary, will sign a letter of intent to collaborate on the program with Amit Chakma, Western president, on Wednesday.

“Several years ago Professor Gu was approached by Hebei University to assist in setting up a biomedical Imaging program at that institute, modeled on the imaging group at Robarts, and asked me to join the effort as an advisor, “said Peters, who was appointed adjunct professor at Hebei last year. “We have begun the process of video-recording lectures in medical imaging and image-guided interventions here at Western, which will hopefully form the basis of foundation courses in their developing program.”

Founded in 1921, Hebei University is a key comprehensive university located in Hebei province in the North China region (close to Beijing). The university has more than 300,000 graduates from disciplines such as business, medicine, science and technology, philosophy and the social sciences.
