Leenders honoured for contributions

Michiel (Mike) Leenders, Richard Ivey School of Business professor emeritus, has made significant contributions to the field of purchasing and supply management throughout his career, in particular through the creation of the Ivey Purchasing Managers Index, an economic index which measures month-to-month variation in economic activity as indicated by a panel of purchasing managers across Canada.

Recently, Leenders received the John H. Hoagland Award for Distinguished Service to recognize those contributions. He was honoured during the 2011 North American Research Symposium held March 17-18 in San Diego. This accomplishment is particularly significant because the award is not conferred annually, but only when individuals’ contributions deserve special recognition.

For more than 40 years, Leenders worked with the Purchasing Management Association of Canada (PMAC) to develop a world-class professional development program. He is also author/co-author of several textbooks on purchasing and supply management.

During his Ivey tenure, he headed the operations management group for 25 years and was director of Ivey’s PhD program for five years.
