This afternoon, librarians and archivists at The University of Western Ontario announced they would commence strike action effective 12:01 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 8

The 51 members of the bargaining unit are represented by the University of Western Ontario Faculty Association (UWOFA). The librarians and archivists and the university have been meeting since April 26, working to renew the group’s second contract, which ended June 30.

The two sides remain divided, primarily over monetary issues, although the university has offered to establish a pay equity process.

During this labour disruption, all Western students are required to attend all classes as usual. As well, all university employees who are not members of the librarian and archivist bargaining unit are required to report to work as usual.

All campus libraries remain open and most library services will be available, including borrowing and accessing physical materials, accessing electronic materials, directional services and reference source assistance. However, highly subject specific, in-depth reference services may not be available. Libraries at the three Affiliated University Colleges (Brescia, Huron and King’s) and at St. Peter’s Seminary would not be affected by this labour disruption.

Pickets are expected at various entrances to the campus, and so Western students, employees and visitors should allow extra time when entering or departing campus. Other motorists who may drive through Western on their way elsewhere may wish to seek an alternative route.

It should also be noted that LTC buses will not cross picket lines so revised routes and timetables have been developed and are available online.
