Western philosophy professor John L. Bell will deliver the keynote address to the Western Canadian Philosophical Association Conference 2011 on Friday, Oct. 21 at the University of Lethbridge. His lecture, The Continuous and the Infinitesimal, will survey the evolution of both concepts over the centuries.

Bell, Canada’s top mathematical logician, is the author of more than 70 articles and of 10 books, several of which have become to be regarded as classics in their fields. In 2009, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.

At age 15, he was awarded a scholarship to Oxford University, and graduated with a D.Phil. in mathematics. During the period 1968-89, he was a lecturer in mathematics, and later reader in mathematical logic at the London School of Economics. He has been with Western for more than two decades.
