University of Western Ontario economics professor Ronald Wintrobe is one of four Canadian recipients of a research grant from the Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) and the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET).
Wintrobe is also co-director of the Political Economy Research Group at Western and author of Rational Extremism: The Political Economy of Radicalism (2006), The Political Economy of Dictatorship (1998) and (with Albert Breton) of The Logic of Bureaucratic Conduct (1982), all published by Cambridge University Press.
He has also written two radio programs on political economy for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's "Ideas" series. Wintrobe’s research grant will go toward his project Economic Thinking and Buddhist Thinking.
CIGI, based in Waterloo, is an independent, nonpartisan think tank addressing international governance challenges. INET, based in New York, is an organization created to promote changes in economic theory and practice through conferences, grants and education initiatives.
In response to the inadequacy of existing economic knowledge, the CIGI-INET grant program identifies key areas in economics requiring significant attention and supports the research that addresses these gaps.
In the Spring 2011 Grant Program, more than 400 proposals were reviewed by the research jury and narrowed down to 59 finalists, from which 23 project grants and research programs in the United States and Canada were identified and approved. The entire field of recipients comes from 15 different countries in North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, Latin America and the Middle East.
For more information on the Spring 2011 Grant Program, including the full list of 23 recipients, visit the program website.
