In memoriam - Gary Ferguson (posted Feb. 2, 2012)
Retired faculty member Gary Ferguson died on Dec. 4, 2011 at the age of 70. Prior to his retirement in 2007 he had 34 years of service.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years Mary Elizabeth Ferguson (nee Kirkpatrick). Dear father of Stephen and his wife Kathryn of London, Heather Ferguson and her husband Stephane Elibani of Gatineau, Quebec, and Sarah Ferguson and her husband Paul McCracken of Toronto. Loving grandfather of Alexander Chaboud, Benjamin Chaboud, Laura Ferguson, Anna McCracken, Marc Ferguson, Katie McCracken and Juliana Ferguson.
He received his Medical Degree in 1965 (cum laude) and his Ph.D. in Medical Biophysics in 1970 from the University of Western Ontario. Gary is internationally recognized as a leader on research in stroke prevention surgery.
In memoriam - John Alvin Boyd (posted Jan. 9)
Professsor Emeritus J. Alvin Boyd died on December 31, 2011 in his 87th year. Beloved husband of Ruth (Betzner) for 52 years, dear dad of Susan and her husband Greg Hall of Red Deer, AB, Jennifer Boyd of Toronto and Mona and her husband Andrew Garde of Oakville, and loving grandad of Blake, Brent and Corry Hall and Hazel and Manon Garde. Al had a 37 year career teaching French and Spanish, beginning in Kitchener- Waterloo. He came to London when Althouse College of Education opened in 1965 and retired after 20 years of service at Western. As an expression of sympathy, donations to the Memorial Fund of Metropolitan United Church, 468 Wellington Street, London, ON N6A 3P8, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
In memoriam - Constance Bartlett Hieatt (posted Jan. 9)
Before retiring in 1993, Professor Emeritus Constance Hieatt had 25 years of service at Western in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. She died on December 29, 2011 at the age of 83.
In memoriam - Nancy Ecclestone (posted Dec. 20)
Retired Health Sciences faculty member Nancy Ecclestone died peacefully at University Hospital on Monday, December 19, 2011 in her 75th year. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Ted Ecclestone. Nancy will be missed by her four children, Susan, Ted and his wife Anna-Maria, Peter and his wife Sarah, and James; grandchildren Teddy, Aidan, Liam, Amy, Samantha, and John. Dear sister of Tom Kirkpatrick, Mary Ferguson and Susan Taylor. Nancy received her Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees from the University of Western Ontario and her Teacher's Certificate from the University of Toronto. She was a teacher, computer programmer and the Director of the Centre for Activity and Ageing. Prior to her retirement from Western in 2002 she had 25 years of service. Nancy served on many volunteer committees, including the London Art Gallery and the Women's Christian Association. A generous grandmother, family was very important to Nancy. She always sought out and excelled at new challenges including obtaining a computer science degree after raising four children, learning to play the clarinet in her retirement, and breaking 100 at golf in her seventies. Visitation on Wednesday from 3-5 and 7-9 pm at the James A. Harris Funeral Home, 220 St. James St. at Richmond. A celebration of her life will be conducted at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, 280 St. James St. at Wellington, on Thursday, December 22 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Canadian Centre for Activity and Aging, 1490 Richmond St., London, ON N6G 2M3 would be gratefully acknowledged.
In memoriam - Doris Steeves (posted Dec. 15)
Prior to her retirement from Student Services in 1979, Doris Steeves had six years of service at Western. She died on December 3, 2011 at the age of 97. A memorial service was held for Doris on December 7, 2011. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke foundation or the London Humane Society would be appreciated by the family.

Wanda Choinski retired in 1992 after 25 years as a staff member in Facilities Management at Western. She died on November 22, 2011 at the age of 84. Loving mother of John and his wife Suzanne. Cherished grandmother of Romeo and Jayden.
In memoriam - Geoffrey Ditcher (posted Nov. 28)
Prior to retiring in 2004 Geoffrey Ditcher gave 35 years of service at Western as a member of our Operating Engineers. Geoffrey died on November 26, 2011 at the age of 72. Visitation is scheduled for November 30, 2011 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the A. Millard George Funeral Home, 60 Ridout St. S., London, ON. His funeral service will also be held at the same location on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 1:00 p.m.

Professor Emeritus Donald Bruce Hayden retired faculty member from Biology died on November 20, 2011. He retired from Western in 2009 after 46 years of service. Visitation service at McFarlane & Roberts Funeral Home, 2240 Wharncliffe Rd. S Lambeth on Thursday, November 24, 2011 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. where a funeral service will also be held on Friday, November 25 at 11:00 a.m.
In memoriam - Walter (Pete) Colston Howell (posted Nov. 21)
Professor Emeritus Walter (Pete) Howell died suddenly on November 16 while traveling in Perugia, Italy, at the age of 82. Prior to his retirement he had 37 years of service in the Chemistry Department at Western. In addition to his teaching career, Pete was also active on the administrative side of academia, serving as the Assistant Dean of Science and later as Secretary of the Senate. In retirement he enjoyed traveling the world with his wife Helene and stayed active curling, golfing and playing hockey up until his death. Pete was a well-loved and life-loving man who laughed often and laughed well. Friends and family will be received at the LOGAN FUNERAL HOME, 371 Dundas St., London, on Sunday, November 20, from 7 to 9 PM and Monday, November 21, from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 9 PM. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Georges Roman Catholic Church, 1164 Commissioners Road West, London, at 11 AM on Tuesday, November 22, with a reception to follow at the London Hunt Club.

Retired Western Engineering professor William Peacock died on November 5, 2011 at the age of 83. Professor Peacock retired from Western in July 1994 after 33 years of service.

Professor Emeritus David Maxwell Scott, a retired Faculty member from the Department of Zoology (Biology) died on September 15, 2011 at the age of 91. Prof. Scott retired after 34 years of service with the University of Western Ontario. He leaves his wife Rosemary to whom he was married for 63 years, his daughter Susan (Ed), his sons Tony (Pam) and Brian (Lisa), and four grandchildren. Predeceased by son Neil. Brian Osborne worked in Information and Technology Services for 32 years. On October 2, 2011 Brian died at the age of 62.

Beloved husband of the late Kathryn Elizabeth (Baker) Judd. Dear father of Kenneth W. Judd (Bonnie) of Pickering, Donald W. Judd (Diane) of Calgary, Ruth E. Burton (Dudley) of Mitchell and Dorothy G. Judd (Ray Hamilton) of Pennsylvania. Dear brother of Alan F. Judd of Winnipeg and David A. W. Judd of Niagara-on-the-Lake and predeceased by Gladys Valerie Judd, Betty Jones and Patrick Judd. Loved by 5 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at Bishop Cronyn Memorial Church, 442 William Street, on Friday from 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Bishop Cronyn Memorial Church on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Rae Fletcher officiating. Cremation to follow with interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto.

At the age of 96 retired Geology professor Aleksis Dreimanis died on July 8, 2011. Prior to his retirement in July 1980 Aleksis had 31 years of service at Western.

Prof. Gordon C. Hay retired from the Faculty of Education in 1983 after 15 years of service. Gordon died on September 14, 2011 at the age of 91.
In memoriam - Vera Galbraith (posted Sept. 14)
Vera Galbraith worked as a Western staff member in Residence Admissions and Off Campus Housing for 19 years before her retirement in 1988. She died on August 31, 2011 at the age of 87. A celebration of Vera's life is scheduled for September 17, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at McFarlane & Roberts Funeral Home at 2240 Wharncliffe Rd. S. London, ON.
In memoriam - Arabella “Belle” Pengelly (posted Sept. 8)
On September 4, 2011 Arabella “Belle” Pengelly died a the age of 90. She worked for 17 years in the Western Bookstore before her retirement in 1986. She leaves behind son Bill (Bruce) and daughter Margaret (Michael) Head, treasured grandchildren Dianne (Matthew) Armstrong, Ryan (Jana) Head and her very special treasures, her great-grandchildren Hudson and Hayley Armstrong. Visitation is Saturday, September 10 from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 10:30 a.m. at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Rd. N., London.

Nikki Petrie a staff member in Nursing died on August 23, 2011 at the age of 44. Nikki had worked at Western for 12 years. Visitation will be held Monday, August 29, 2011 at the A. In memoriam - Arnold Harris (posted Aug. 23)
On July 12, 2011 Professor Emeritus of Mathematics Arnold Harris died at the age of 92. He was the beloved husband of the late Lilly Harris. Prior to his retirement in 1976 he had 11 years of service at Western. Mr. Harris served as Provincial Inspector of Mathematics before becoming Head of the Faculty of Mathematics at Althouse College.

Professor Emeritus Richard Greyson retired from the faculty of Plant Services in 1992 with 28 years of service. He died on July 23, 2011 at the age of 79. Richard was pre-deceased by his wife, Dorothy (Auterson), and is survived by his children Maureen, Peter, John, Philip and Cecilia. On August 2, 2011 Professor Emeritus William McMurray died at the age of 80. Prior to his retirement in 1996 McMurray had 36 years of service as a faculty member in Biochemistry. Cherished husband of Marilyn McMurray of London. Dear father of Geoffrey McMurray and Susan McMurray both of London.
In memoriam - Gilbert Heseltine (posted Aug. 9)
Professor Emeritus Gil Heseltine was a faculty member in psychiatry for 21 years before his retirement in 1993. He died on March 5, 2011 at the age of 82. He is survived by his wife Ethel, and two sons Geoff (Susan) and Chris (Cheryl). He was predeceased by daughter Pam.

Proir to her retirement Barbara Anderson worked for 33 years in the Medical Biophysics Department. Barbara died in her 68th year on July 27, 2011. She is survived by husband Ray Ford and daughters Kim Pateman (Henry) and Shelley Lake.

Maria Bryant worked in Western Libraries as a Library Assistant for 30 years. She died on July 26, 2011 at the age of 50.
In memoriam - Ernest Capstick (posted July 15)
Ernest Capstick a lead caretaker in Facilities Management died at the age of 58 on July 14, 2011. Visitation for Ernest took place on Sunday, July 17, 2011 and a memorial service was held at the same location on Monday, July 18 at 10:00 a.m. Ernest had six years of service with Facilities Management.
In Memoriam - Elizabeth Bieman
University of Western Ontario professor emeritus Elizabeth Bieman died at the age of 88. She retired with 24 years of service at the university.
Bieman was professor of English at Western and a member of that department's stellar group of Renaissance scholars during the 1970s and 80s. She is best known for her work on Spenser, which culminated in the publication of Plato Baptised: Towards the Interpretation of Spenser's Mimetic Fictions (1988).
Her funeral was held July 29 at 11 a.m. at the Church of St. john the Evangelist (280 St. James Street) in London. Donations to Parkwood Hospital Palliative Care or a charity of your choice gratefully accepted.

Prof. Emeritus John Reid died on Feb. 25, 2011 at the age of 85. He retired in July 1989 and had 21 years of service at Western in Dentistry-Radiology.

Prof. Emeritus William F. Dawson died on May 16, 2011 at the age of 80. Professor Dawson was a faculty member from Political Science who had 29 years of service before he retired in 1995.

Cary Daniel died on June 6, 2011 at the age of 51. Cary had seven years of service with Western Libraries. He is survived by his wife Anne, seven sisters and one brother and large extended family of 38 nieces and nephews and 25 great nieces and nephews. Prof. Emeritus Anthony Cooper Webster retired in July 1992 after 23 years of service in the department of Anaesthesia. He died at the age of 84 on June 5, 2011. Dr. Webster's funeral is on June 9 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Cathedral.

Kris Milne died at the age of 59 on April 30, 2011. She worked in the pathology department as a teaching aide technician for 36 years. During this time, she earned a bachelor's degree in 1993 and an honours degree in visual arts in 2001. She is survived by her son Nathan. A memorial gathering for friends and family is scheduled for 1-5 p.m. Saturday, May 7 at 229 Rathowen St., London.

Retired staff member Darlene Wells died on April 26, 2011 at the age of 78. Before she retired in 1994 Darlene worked in Saugeen-Maitland Hall as an administrative secretary from 1969-1974 and then returned in 1976 for 18 more years of service at Western.

The flag will be lowered until 1:00 pm on February 17, 2011 in memory of Lawrence Tapp, retired former Dean of Ivey. Tapp retired in 2003 and had eight years of visionary service at Western. He passed away on January 31, 2011 at the age of 73. Read Western News article.

Helen Kyle died on January 3, 2011 at the age of 94. Prior to her retirement Helen worked for 22 years as a staff member in Zoology.
