Western Mustangs women's rugby head coach Natascha Wesch is leading a group of 11 varsity athletes to promote women's rugby and the pursuit of post-secondary education in Bermuda.

The Mustangs' student-athletes travelling to Bermuda include Victoria Hunter, Rachel Roskey, Rachael McMaster, Kellie Renwick, Jennifer Shotbolt, Leah Lawson, Julia Goss, Radhika Sikhakhane, Lauren Congdon, Arielle Dubissette-Borrice and Natalie Krieger.

The delegation has partnered with the Bermuda Rugby Union (BRU) and the North American-Caribbean Rugby Association (NACRA) and will spend a week in Bermuda, returning this Friday (Feb. 25).

"An important part that we often overlook in sport is the power that sport has for young women in developing self-esteem and confidence," says Wesch. "This is a great opportunity not only for our student-athletes but also for the young women we will meet along the way."

The student-athletes will conduct clinics for Bermuda's elite level female rugby players to introduce them to the technical aspects of contact rugby. Bermuda women's rugby players currently only play non-contact, touch rugby.

The women will also visit four schools in Bermuda to talk to the students about the value of post-secondary education.

"I applaud the initiative and leadership of our coach and the members of the Mustang rugby team in their efforts to further develop women's rugby in the Caribbean.”

The Mustangs will be writing about their experience and the blog posts can be found on the women's rugby section of the Western Mustangs website.
