Two research projects at The University of Western Ontario were among the 122 projects chosen to receive federal funding under a program that aims to turn the results of academic research into real benefits for Canadians.

The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), made the announcement Monday at Western’s new Convergence Centre.

“Our government is investing in research and development to create jobs, strengthen the economy and improve the quality of life of Canadians,” says Goodyear. “These projects will help universities develop, attract and retain the world’s best researchers, while building a strong foundation for future economic growth across Canada.”

In one project, led by Faculty of Engineering professor Greg Kopp, researchers are conducting full-scale testing of wood frame failures in severe windstorms, to gain information on how to build safer, more durable structures.

In the second project, led by Chemistry professor Paul Ragogna, researchers are hoping to reduce corrosion problems associated with construction equipment by developing new water resistant surfaces that prevent moisture from forming. This project could improve safety and reduce expense for the industry.

The two projects in London are receiving a total of $310,010 under the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council’s Strategic Project Grants program. Across the country, the government will invest $53.5 million over three years to support 122 research projects at universities.

Target areas for funding under the Strategic Project Grants include environmental science and technologies, natural resources and energy, information and communications technologies, and health.
