The University of Western Ontario has announced the appointment of George K. Knopf as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering.

George Knopf

Knopf assumes these responsibilities on January 1, 2008, continuing until such time as Western's next Dean of Engineering takes office. He replaces Franco Berruti who steps down as dean effective December 31 in order to focus more attention on his research.

Currently serving as the Associate Dean (Academic) of Western's Faculty of Engineering, Knopf holds four degrees from the University of Saskatchewan, including a B.A. (Anthropology) and a B.Eng., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. He has been a member of the Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering since 1993.

As Associate Dean (Academic), he has worked to enrich undergraduate engineering education at the University and was a leader of the faculty's recent participation in the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) review of all undergraduate Engineering programs at Western.

Knopf's principal areas of teaching and research are in the field of product design and manufacturing. He is a leader in the development of intelligent systems for engineering design, optical sensing, and micro-fabrication processes. His research has resulted in patented technologies for non-contact shape measurement and optical imaging.

“I am pleased to announce George Knopf's appointment as Acting Dean," says Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Fred Longstaffe.

“His experience within the Faculty and his knowledge of Western will make him an effective leader during this period of transition for Engineering at Western."
