Western doing its part for Energy Conservation Week
Monday, May 26, 2008
While the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) is urging its consumers to pay special attention to reducing consumption during Energy Conservation Week (May 25-31), Western is already taking steps to promote wise energy use.
The Physical Plant Department, in charge of energy purchasing for the university, is encouraging staff and students to be energy conscious and maximize efficiency on campus.
Physical Plant has contributed to the effort by appointing a Sustainability Officer, installing energy efficient lighting, seeking out suppliers offering incentives for the purchase of efficient equipment, maintaining machinery and filters to ensure optimal operation, and monitoring consumption for auditing purposes.
Many recommendations made to the division by the OPA have been acknowledged or are in the process of being met at Western.
Other campus groups making contributions include Housing, which recently upgraded to compact fluorescent light bulbs in residence lamps, and Western Retail Services, which switched to Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper in its Graphic Services operation.
As with most awareness campaigns there is an expectation efforts will continue long after events wrap up. So this week, and beyond, energy users are urged to be mindful of their use and switch off unused devices.
