After two years of collaborative research in the area of exercise during pregnancy, Western's Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Physical Activity & Sport Sciences at the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid have signed a formal agreement to advance the research links of both institutions through knowledge exchange, research proposals and visitation between the schools.

Prior to the formal signing of the agreement, two PhD students from Universidad Politécnica spent three months working at Western’s R. Samuel McLaughlin Foundation Exercise and Pregnancy Lab with Michelle Mottola. Additionally, Mottola has travelled to Madrid and presented a workshop to the graduate students of Rubén Barakat-Carballo.

Signing the agreement are Ruben Barakat-Carballo, Associate Professor, School of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences and Javier Sampedro Molinuevo, Dean, School of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, both from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, along with Margaret Cheesman, Acting Associate Dean (Academic Programs) in the Faculty of Health Sciences and associate professor Michelle Mottola.

The agreement, which extends until 2015, was finalized Oct. 12 by representatives from Western and Universidad Politécnica in the 3M Centre at Western.

Founded in 1971, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid is located in Madrid, Spain, and is one of that country’s top universities. Though a relatively young institution, many of its centres were founded in the 18th and 19th centuries.
