Western's waste is community's gain
Thursday, June 24, 2010
To help clean out Western's closets, Physical Plant & Capital Planning Services is hoping to give old furniture and equipment a new home.
There is a growing consensus on campus that Western can ‘do more’ when it comes to furniture recycling.
The already tight quarters in some buildings are being crowded with large, derelict equipment. To help alleviate these issues, Physical Plant & Capital Planning Services is offering a free service to round-up these unwanted items as part of a summer long initiative, the “Furniture & Equipment Recycling Program.”
“We have a responsibility to ensure that the materials we’ve brought on campus, such as furnishings, are handled responsibly beyond their usefulness to the University,” says Grounds and Waste Supervisor, Jim Galbraith. “Over the next few months, we expect to reduce the backlog of items and find a better home for them.”
Physical Plant will remove the furniture and/or equipment to a temporary holding area in Staging Building, Room 114.
For the duration of the program this area will be open to the campus community for browsing on Tuesday afternoons from noon to 3:30 p.m.
All items are free for the taking and Physical Plant will provide delivery service for on-campus drop-offs.
A blog has been created to catalogue new inventory. This will be regularly updated with a picture and a brief description of the item. The first few items have already been posted at http://ferpwestern.blogspot.com/.
After about two weeks, any unclaimed items considered to be in good shape will be delivered to a local charitable organization as a donation. Nonfunctional items will be dismantled onsite and the materials will be delivered to a certified recycling facility.
To request a pick-up, members of campus can either complete the online request form or download the form and fax it in to the Service Centre.
Questions and comments regarding the program can be forwarded to ppd-ferp@uwo.ca.
