Two McIntosh exhibits open Thursday
Wednesday, September 16, 2009
Calgary artist Robert Kelly lifts the cover on the minutia of everyday life in a new exhibit on display in the McIntosh Gallery opening Thursday.
Kelly’s installation of eleven hardcover and leather-bound books arranged in a circle contain a foreword by a prominent guest writer. The title of the books comes from the phrase the artist discovered in a letter from a Chinese immigrant reading “the first time I heard the sound of a page turning.”
Each book contains a different format, varying from open verse to the repetition of a single word to demonstrate its importance to communication.
Kelly will be on hand for the exhibit opening at 6 p.m. Later in the evening, he will present a lecture on “Creativity as a Primary Rationale for Learning and Living,” at King’s University College, Labatt Hall Room 105, which begins at 7:30 p.m.
Also opening on Thursday, Sept. 17 is Michael Snow’s exhibit, Condensation. A Cove Story.
In its Canadian premiere as part of London Ontario Live Arts Fest (LOLA), the 10-minute silent projection of temporarily compressed, condensed recordings of several weather events which took place on or near a wild landscape in the Maritimes. The events are captured by a digital time-lapsed still camera.
Snow’s opening will begin at 6 p.m. and the artist will be present.
The same night at 7 p.m., ArtLab at the John Labatt Visual Arts Centre will open the exhibition by Robert Youds titled Jesus Green Tofino Sunset, along with hosting the grand opening of LOLA.
