A Sunday afternoon fire in Talbot College caused significant damage and has forced the closure of the building's Encore Café. But it hasn't stopped Hospitality Services from continuing to cater to students, staff and faculty.

Director of Hospitality Services Frank Miller says a makeshift Tim Horton's, complete with baked goods, has been set up just outside the burned-out eatery. Vending machines located in the café have also been moved to the hallway.

“While there are other locations on campus to get food and drink, we recognized the need for those in Talbot College and have addressed this as best as possible," says Miller, adding all hospitality employees have been re-assigned for the time being. “A lot of folks expressed concern over the staff. They have been looked after."

The fire at Talbot College's Encore Cafe began Sunday night when a cooler in the servery overheated and caught fire. Winmar Restoration's Rachel Ferguson helped with the clean-up. Repairs, expected to exceed $100,000, will begin immediately.

The fire started shortly after 5:30 p.m. when a cooler in the servery overheated and caught fire, sending flames up a nearby heating duct and into the adjacent cafeteria room. Clean-up is near completion and repairs, expected to exceed $100,000, will begin immediately. The café will remain closed for the remainder of the academic year.
