Enjoy a black box theatre experience as singers from the Don Wright Faculty of Music perform scenes from early and contemporary operas in "Opera Then and Now" March 19-20.
 
The singers remain on stage throughout the concert. The repertoire ranges from the extremely dramatic excerpt from Handel's Alcina, to the rather more sublime scenes from Monteverdi's Incoronazione de Poppea. It will also feature performances of modern opera scenes from Ligeti’s Grand Macabre to “Finally Writing to Vermeer,” an opera by Dutch composer Louis Andriessen.
 
The free event, directed by Music professor John Hess, will be held in the Music Building, Room 104 beginning at 8 p.m.
 
On Friday, March 19, the 12:30 p.m. performance in von Kuster Hall features part-time faculty member Leslie Kinton. Half of the well-known piano duo Anagnoson & Kinton, he will be performing a solo recital of works by Scarlatti, Brahms, and Messiaen. The event is free to the public.
 
The student orchestra and three of the choirs are performing Mahler's Resurrection Symphony on March 28, at 3 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
 
On March 26, the Friday, noon-hour concert series features the premiere of a work by professor David Myska, titled “On the Steps of Mariyinsky Palace.”
 
The free event begins at 12:30 p.m. in von Kuster Hall, Music Building. The concert features Annette-Barbara Vogel on violin, William Powell, clarinet, and Myska on piano.
 
The Western Symphony Orchestra with UWO Singers, Chorale, and Thames Scholars will be performing Mahler Symphony No. 2 - The Resurrection on March 28 in honour of Mahler’s 150th birthday.
 
The concert begins at 3 p.m. in Alumni Hall. Tickets are sold in advance by calling the Orchestra London box office at 519-679-8778. Unsold tickets will be available at the door, for cash only. Ticket prices are $15 per /$10.

This will be Professor James McKay's final concert as conductor of the UWO Symphony Orchestra.
