The Don Wright Faculty of Music is inviting the community to a public forum on abused women - as portrayed in Kurt Weill's opera Street Scene.

The free event will be held Sunday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. at First-St. Andrew's United Church, hosted by the Rev. David McKane.

UWOpera director Theodore Baerg and students will perform a few songs from the opera, providing a jumping off point for Dr. Barbara Lent from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, and Kate Wiggins, executive director of Women's Community House to discuss the current situation with abuse in London.

Kurt Weill was impressed by the clarity of language and depth of emotion in Elmer Rice's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Street Scene. The play dealt with realistic subject matter of immigrants and lower-class residents of a New York street pursuing their dreams while coping with the complexities of everyday life - seductions, squabbles, betrayals and murder.

That realism shines a light on the plight of two abused women - Anna and her daughter Rose. The opera ends in ambiguity: does another couple take up the tragic narrative where Anna's story ended?

Lent and Wiggins will provide insight into current approaches to helping women. McKane will facilitate discussion with the audience.

The evening promises a taste of wonderful music blending opera, cabaret and jazz, with information about how awareness and acknowledgement of the issue of abuse, as raised by the opera, have brought positive changes to society.

First-St. Andrew's United Church is located at Waterloo Street and Queen's Avenue.
