Teaching excellence was recognized recently by those who would recognize it best -- students.

Faculty members (from left, back) Rob Wardhaugh, Neil Bradford, (front), Stephen Pitel and Jill Ball received the University Students' Council Teaching Awards of Excellence for their classroom skills. Top students were also given awards at the March 19 ceremony.

The University Students' Council 2008-2009 Awards Gala on March 19 at Conron Hall saw faculty and students showcased for their teaching and academic prowess.

USC Teaching Awards of Excellence recipients are recognized for their commitment to undergraduate education and student life. Selection criteria include rapport with students and combining instruction with creative vision.

Jill Ball of the Don Wright Faculty of Music, Neil Bradford of Huron University College's Faculty of Arts & Social Science, Stephen Pitel of the Faculty of Law and Rob Wardhaugh of the Faculty of Social Science were presented with honourary plaques and showered with accolades by student organizers.

“I think the recipients are amazing," says David Simmons, USC VP University Affairs. “It's great to see faculty engaged in research also engage their students in the classroom.

“I think what we're seeing is almost a renaissance of student-faculty engagement. A lot of the teachers who won this year are people recognized by the quality of their research."

For her part, Ball says she is “very proud" of the award. “When you love what you're doing, it's more of a vocation than a job."

Saying he was delighted with the award, Pitel added that he was appreciative of the USC for encouraging the support of teaching and “for giving me and the other teachers something to aspire to."

Student Awards of Merit were presented to engineering students Federico Berruti and Mark Cicero, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry students Michael Connolly and Jacqueline Hayworth and Sharifa Mohamed of Huron University College. The Future of Western Award was given to science student Yiming Ma.

Other awards included the USC Alumni Award given to Tea-Eun Ahn of Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and Yussef El-Kalza of the Faculty of Social Science. The Tracey Knight Memorial Award was given to Allison Lowenger of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

The USC Teaching Awards are sponsored by the USC, Western's Alumni Association and Scotiabank.
