Thanks to phone calls from concerned staff members in Western's Dental Sciences building, a young red-tailed hawk, now rehabilitated from minor injuries, will be released this Thursday.

Brian Salt, Director of Salthaven Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, shows off the red-tailed hawk rescued on campus last week.

It began last Wednesday when Western's Department of Animal Care and Veterinary Services (ACVS) received a number of concerned, and even frantic, calls regarding an injured red-tailed hawk in the Dental Sciences parking lot.

Fortunately, ACVS Assistant Director Tyrrel de Langley, who also owns Oakridge Animal Clinic - consultants to Salthaven Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre - knew what to do.

Brian Salt, Director of Salthaven, was contacted and immediately made his way to campus. By this time the hawk had managed to get into a low-hanging tree branch then glided to the top of the Dental Sciences addition.

With the help of caretaking staff, de Langley and Salt gained access to the roof, where at this point the hawk seemed more interested in the crowd that had gathered below. Salt, taking advantage of the distraction, darted out and netted the startled bird before it had any awareness of his captor's presence.

The hawk was examined and no fractures were noted. It appeared the injuries were bruising and other apparently minor soft tissue injuries.

“This is a huge red-tail," admits Salt, noting females are normally 30 per cent larger than males. “But this is one of the largest young females I've seen in 20 years."

Following a few days of rest and rehabilitation at Salthaven, Carol, as the hawk has now been named, will be released Thursday at noon in the medical parking lot off Elgin Drive, outside of the Dental Clinic. The campus community is welcome to view the release.
