Spice up your lunch hour with music
Friday, September 11, 2009
Award-winning pianist Neal Cabigon takes the stage of the Paul Davenport Theatre on Friday, Sept. 11 for the first of three public performances by renowned artists for the noon hour series.
Cabigon is a fourth-year student in the Honors Performance program, studying with Stephan Sylvestre. He is the recipient of the 2008-09 Inaugural Fred Pattison piano competition.
He will perform works by Chopin, Janacek, Mucynski and Dutilleux. The concert will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Talbot College.
Last year, Cabigon won both the Don Wright Faculty of Music’s concerto competition and the Fred Pattison Scholarship. His recital will show off the improved acoustics of the theatre.
Formally known as the Talbot Theatre, the concert hall was renamed in honour Paul Davenport’s 15 years of leadership as university president.
The renovations added flexibility to the hall, allowing it to transform from an open stage for large ensembles to an intimate setting with a moveable shell. A third-floor classroom above the house was removed to extend the ceiling space, contributing to improved reverberation time.
Cut stone, wood strips and velvet drapery help create adjustable controls over the acoustics. Combined, they create a stunning hall to hear some of the best music in London.
The theatre opened originally in January 1966. Since then, it has been the home of concerts, recitals, operas and operettas, touring artists and the faculty’s own students and professors.
After 43 years of continual use, it needed upgrading in seating, acoustics and technical components. Now it boasts a reverberation time of almost two seconds, seating for 400 and an elegant look.
The Don Wright Faculty of Music offers free public concerts every Friday beginning at 12:30 p.m. All of the Friday noon hour concerts are free.
The first three concerts in the series will be presented in the Paul Davenport Theatre. See and hear the changes for yourself.
Following Neal’s performance, Diva Lounge Productions presents Mozart’s The Impressario on Friday, Sept. 18 with Sonja Gustafson and fellow faculty alumni Ian and Taylor Robertson, Paul Grambo and Morgan Jones.
Ensemble Gombert, a chamber choir, arrives from Australia on Friday, Sept. 25 for a free public performance.
