Huron University College will become an affiliate member with the Toronto School of Theology, subject to Board of Governors approval, to allow for exchange of theology program students.
This will allow Huron students to have access to the broader range of courses offered through any of the other university institutions that are members of affiliates within the Toronto School of Theology.

The School of Theology comprises a working agreement among faculties of theology in 10 university colleges including the original seven schools at the University of Toronto who came together in 1969-70, and three affiliates: Conrad Grebel University College, Waterloo Lutheran Seminary and the Institute for Christian Studies.

Huron, being a relatively small seminary with six faculty members, is able to offer core courses and specialties that exist in the Huron teaching faculty.

Davenport speaks with Finance Minister

Western President Paul Davenport spoke with Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan earlier this month during a pre-budget consultation visit.

Davenport highlighted the need to continue to focus on investment at the post-secondary level to ensure the momentum built over the last couple of years - in particular with graduate studies - is not lost, and that conditions do not deteriorate.  The topic of deferred maintenance was also raised.

Arts and Humanities adds offerings

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities will introduce Minor modules in Creative Writing, Popular Literature and Cultural Studies beginning in September.

Open to all students at the university, the Minor in Creative Writing will offer undergraduate students the opportunity to develop their ability to write fiction, poetry, screenplays and other forms of imaginative literature.

The study of English literature has expanded in recent years to include a greater emphasis on popular genres and the ways in which they both reflect and contribute to cultural values. The proposed Minor in Popular Literature and Cultural Studies will allow the Department of English to keep pace with these disciplinary developments.

King's inks agreement with Fanshawe, Lambton colleges

King's University College has signed an articulation agreement with London's Fanshawe College and Sarnia's Lambton College with regard to transfer of applicants from the Social Service Worker, Child and Youth Worker and Early Childhood Education programs.

King's has shared transfer credit agreement with both colleges for a number of years. The development of these agreements predated the approval process for articulation agreements required by Senate. The terms will be in place for three years.

New scholarships, bursaries

The William and Nesta Gordon Family Wrestling Scholarships (two valued at $2,000) will be awarded to any full-time undergraduate or graduate students in any year of a degree program who are making significant contributions as members of the men's or women's wrestling teams.

The Gerhard Wuensch Music Scholarship (one valued at $1,125) will be awarded to a music student entering his/her first year of study in Music Theory and Composition, or Music History. The award is based on academic achievement and was established through Foundation Western by Jean Wuensch in memory of her husband Gerhard, a retired faculty member of the Don Wright Faculty of Music.

The Claudette MacDonald HBA Scholarship (two valued at $6,000) will be awarded to students entering HBA 2 at the Richard Ivey School of Business with academic achievement and demonstrated community leadership. Preference will be given to students pursuing a career in accounting. These scholarships were established with a gift from Don MacDonald.

Undergraduate enrolment targets

Senate approved the following targets for first year undergraduate enrolment: Western - 4,350; Brescia - 296; Huron - 400; and King's - 860.

Western Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Fred Longstaffe has permission to alter the enrolment objective for Western's target, following consultation and approval from the Subcommittee on Enrolment Planning and Policy, as might be appropriate given the particulars of a government funding announcement.

No program-specific entrance requirement will be set below an A average in 2008-09, except where an audition is a major element of selection. Although the exact value will ultimately be determined by this initial admission minimum, confirmed admission to any program will be contingent on a final grade of no lower than 77 per cent, except in those program involving performance criteria and in particular limited enrolment programs where the value may be higher.
