University of Western Ontario chemist Richard Puddephatt has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in recognition of outstanding work in inorganic chemistry and leadership within the research community.

The appointment was announced Friday by Governor-General Michaëlle Jean in making 61 appointments to Canada's highest civilian award.

Author of more than 500 scientific journal articles, Puddephatt came to Western in 1978 from the University of Liverpool and has since been recognized internationally for the strength of his research and teaching.

He is regarded as a world expert in platinum and gold chemistry.

Science Dean David Wardlaw called the appointment “an incredible achievement and one that acknowledges many accomplishments and awards over a distinguished career."

President Paul Davenport, speaking with The London Free Press, called Puddephatt “an outstanding, internationally known chemist." Chemistry Chair Kim Baines referred to Puddephatt as “the consummate academic" because his skills embrace not only research but also teaching and administration.

Recipient of Western's Edward G. Pleva Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2004, he was recognized in 2005 with Western's highest faculty honour -- Distinguished University Professor.

Puddephatt is regarded by many of his peers as the best inorganic chemist in Canada. His research on gold and platinum has changed the way these two noble metals are viewed by chemists the world over.
