A half-million dollar contribution from Pfizer Canada has been earmarked to support a national partnership, involving The University of Western Ontario, aimed at fighting diabetes.

The contribution will support the National Diabetes Management Strategy (NDMS), a research partnership between Western and the Canadian Diabetes Association, established in 2007.

Lead investigator in the NDMS is Dr. Stewart Harris, who holds the Canadian Diabetes Association Chair in Diabetes Management at Western. The chair is a cornerstone of the NDMS and the Pfizer Canada contribution will support the research work of Harris and his colleagues.

Earlier this year, Harris was named first holder of the Chair, established with $1-million commitment from both the Canadian Diabetes Association and Western.

The chair was established to develop and evaluate evidence-based models of optimal diabetes management, and to advance the prevention and treatment of diabetes.

“Pfizer Canada is once again partnering with Canada’s leading academic and community health institutions,” says Dr. Bernard Prigent, Vice President and Medical Director, Pfizer Canada. “The objective of this chair is promising and should translate scientific data from clinical practice into tangible health care outcomes to optimize patient management of diabetes.”

Harris’s research has shown that half of Canadians with diabetes are not properly controlling their disease.

“Today, diabetes takes an enormous toll around the world, in terms of personal health and in the financial burden it places on our health care system.  Projections show we can expect dramatic increases in the future. This contribution from Pfizer recognizes the importance of investing in research to meet the challenges these increases will present,” he says.
