The National Youth Orchestra of Canada (NYOC) is taking the stage at Alumni Hall Wednesday for their first performance of a three-week tour.

During the past month, 98 of the best young musicians in Canada have been studying at the Don Wright Faculty of Music. It is the second year The University of Western Ontario has hosted the NYOC, which provides training to those interested in an orchestra career.

The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. and a free will donation will be collected.

Janis Wallace, media relations officer for the faculty, says youth between the ages of 14 and 28 were selected during the spring to attend the summer training session held at Western. They are practicing with principal conductor Jacques Lacombe and renowned faculty from prominent orchestras throughout Europe and North America.

About one third of Canada’s professional orchestral musicians are alumni of the NYOC.

“It’s a chance to hear one of the best orchestras in the county,” says Wallace.

Starting next week the youth orchestra will travel to nine different cities in eastern Canada and the U.S. to perform a repertoire of music, including Beethoven, Strauss, and R. Murray Schafer.

Also for the second year in a row, three Western students in the orchestra will be blogging about their experiences during performances and the training sessions along the tour. To view these entries click here.
