The University of Western Ontario cheerleading team captured the CheerSport National championship this weekend in Atlanta, Georgia.

A video of their performance can be found at http://vimeo.com/20244231.

The CheerSport Nationals is universally referred to as the largest cheerleading event in the world with over 900 teams and 30,000 athletes competing in the 2-day event at the Georgia World Congress Center (Georgia Dome complex) in downtown Atlanta.

The 2011 championship is Western's fifth win in Atlanta with the Mustangs taking home the trophy in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009. In 2010 the Western cheerleading squad placed second to the multi-time U.S. collegiate national champion team from the University of Louisville.

The Mustangs competed in the top college and open coed division, the top category in the competition.

The victory qualifies the Mustangs for the World Championships in Orlando, Florida. Due to the timing of the World Championships (held during spring exams), the Mustangs have declined the opportunity. The second-place finishers, the Carolina All-Stars, have accepted the invitation in the Mustangs absence.

The Western Mustangs cheerleading team will host their spring tryouts and talent identification day on March 18.
