Western service a family affair

For Diane Mills, it is all about keeping the family name alive at Western. Her father, Lyle, was a fixture in the Stevenson-Lawson mailroom until his retirement 20 years ago.

And now, the Don Wright Faculty of Music academic counselor herself has been honored for her service to the university, receiving her 25-year pin.

At a ceremony held at Gibbon’s Lodge, 47 faculty and staff were applauded for ongoing efforts at making Western a great place to work.

“It’s just a wonderful atmosphere to work,” says Mills, also a music grad from Western. “We’re all very fortunate.”

She says her work in the faculty has been a great fit and loves the interaction she has with colleagues, as well as the students.

“I deal with a lot of students in my work, and they’re just so great,” says Mills.

Western President Paul Davenport told those at the ceremony the university’s motto of ‘best student experience’ couldn’t be fulfilled without the dedication from the staff and faculty.

“I think we have a unique situation here at Western; one of openness, tolerance and supportive environment,’ he says. “It’s the type of environment that breeds success and 25 years at the university is good evidence that you’re doing something right.”

For David Hollomby, that something right has been coming to work each day.

“There hasn’t been a day since I’ve been here that I haven’t looked forward to coming to work,” says the Richard Ivey Professor of Medicine and Chair, Chief of Medicine, London Teaching Hospitals. “Western has been a good place for me.”

For Hollomby, he likes the fact his job has given him the opportunity to wear numerous hats.

“I can’t think of a better job. I’m able to keep my feet in academics, research and clinical care,” he says. “It’s a real community for me; not just the university, but the hospital and the city itself.”
