Decorated soldiers entering Law
Wednesday, March 3, 2010
The Faculty of Law at The University of Western Ontario will admit two Canadian Forces members this fall under a new program for Canadian Forces personnel released for medical reasons.
Corporal Chris Housser (British Columbia) and Captain
Trevor Pellerine (Nova Scotia) will start classes at Western in September. Housser
was awarded the General Campaign Star for service in Kandahar, while Pellerine
received a Canadian Forces’ Decoration and a Mention in Dispatches.
The following notation appears in military documents
concerning Pellerine’s service in Afghanistan:
“On 4 June 2008, Taliban
insurgents ambushed and surrounded a partnered Canadian and Afghan Company of
soldiers, bringing intense and deadly fire to bear from three sides for over
ninety minutes. Despite the intensity of fire, Captain Pellerine skillfully controlled
multiple air and aviation assets that enabled the withdrawal of the entrapped
and beleaguered Company. His tactical skill and courage under fire as the
Forward Air Controller saved Canadian and Afghan lives and are testament to his
resolve and training.”
Pellerine is a member of the Royal Canadian Horse
Artillery at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Shilo, near Brandon, Man. The program
provides CF personnel being released for medical reasons with an opportunity to
take a civilian legal education, in recognition of their service.
Western Law provides a simplified application process and
special consideration for admission. Prospective candidates require at least
two years of university or the equivalent and successful completion of the Law School
Admission Test (LSAT) and an admission essay.
“Western’s support has turned my situation into a very
exciting opportunity,” says Pellerine. “This is a great offer, for which I am
truly grateful.”
Law Dean Ian Holloway says he’s pleased to have both
soldiers join the program.
“With their life experiences and the leadership skills
acquired during their years of service, I am sure they will make a great
contribution to both Western Law and the legal profession. We encourage all
qualified CF candidates to apply under this program.”
The program with law schools is one of “many opportunities”
members of the Canadian Forces have when leaving the service, says
Major-General Walter Semianiw, the Chief of Military Personnel, in Ottawa.
“This show of support from Western Law will allow former
CF personnel to transfer their skills to a rewarding new career."
