The Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) has announced the 2011 recipients of its honour awards and fellowships, which includes Western's Jin Jiang, professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering and NSERC/UNENE Senior Industrial Research Chair.

Jiang is among 20 engineers who will be inducted as Fellows of the EIC for their exceptional contributions to engineering in Canada. EIC President Tony Bennett will present the citation at an Annual Awards Banquet in Ottawa Mar. 5. The event will also help mark Canada’s Engineering Week.

“I am really honoured to receive this recognition. It means a lot to me personally as an educator, a researcher, and an engineer,” says Jiang. “This recognition in truth also belongs to my family and friends who believed in me and supported me over the years.”

Jiang is a role model, both as a professional and mentor in the engineering community. His outstanding research experience includes: fault-tolerant control of safety-critical systems, (aircraft, nuclear power plants), advanced control of electrical power plants and power systems (combustion, generation, transmissions, and fuel cells), and advanced signal processing for diagnosis applications (manufacturing processes and human hearts).

Jiang is also a passionate teacher, and has won several teaching awards in the last few years.

“I would like to pay tribute to all of my teachers, mentors, and hardworking and talented graduate students and researchers, who have shaped my life in different ways to make me who I am today,” adds Jiang. “I am also grateful to Western Engineering for giving me an opportunity and dimension to grow in the last twenty years.”

Along with the recognition of prominent engineers in Canada, the EIC aims to develop and promote continuing education, initiate and facilitate interdisciplinary activities and services, advocate the values and benefits of engineering and lead member societies in defining and building the future of engineering.

The honored recipients will also contribute to the EIC’s vision to foster engineering for a prosperous, safe and sustainable Canada.
