Described as an epic human drama that explores the resilience of a family devastated by 1976 Tangshan earthquake, the screening of the film Aftershock will be part of Huron University College's annual China Day this Friday (Feb. 11).

Aftershock uses the Tangshan disaster and the 2008 Sichuan earthquake as links to explore cultural change in China, as well as themes of guilt, forgiveness, and the residual effects of post-traumatic stress.

Prior to the screening of Feng Xiaogang’s 2010 blockbuster film, Zhang Ling, author of the 2006 novella on which the film is based, will give an introductory talk entitled “Seeing is NOT Believing” and respond to audience questions following the film.

Born in Hangzhou, Ling is an award winning Chinese-Canadian writer who immigrated to Vancouver in 1986 to pursue her Master’s in English Literature, and went on to obtain another MA in Communications’ Disorders from the University of Cincinnati.

China Day will begin at 2:30 p.m. and take place in Room V214. Admission is free of charge and refreshments will be available.
