Grassroots Founder's Day initiative takes hold
Tuesday, March 2, 2010
Join in on the celebration as The University of Western Ontario marks 132 years on Founder's Day, Sunday, March 7.
Members of the Alumni Association have developed a grassroots initiative to celebrate Western’s founding on March 7, 1878 when the UWO Act was proclaimed.
Originally named The Western University of London, Ontario, the university was the vision of the Right Reverend Isaac Hellmuth, who was later named Western's first chancellor. It began with courses only in medicine, arts and divinity, but has since grown to 12 faculties.
One of Canada’s oldest universities, Western now boasts approximately 34,000 undergraduate and graduate students, three affiliate colleges, and stretches along the banks of the Thames River.
A special historic menu was developed by Hospitality Services staff to provide students in residence with “items of yore” on March 3.
As well, the External Department will be hosting a Founder’s Day party on Monday, March 8 in the lobby of Westminster Hall.
Check out the March 4 edition of Western News to test your knowledge of Western’s history by filling out the quiz.
