Chief Phil Fontaine, the former National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, will speak on the subject "Legacy and Future: First Nations Human Rights and Canada's Responsibilities" at the 2011 Pensa Lecture in Human Rights.

This free public lecture takes place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 3 in Room 38 of The Faculty of Law at The University of Western Ontario. A reception will follow the lecture in the Law Library.

Fontaine, a three-term National Chief of the AFN, successfully led the $5.2 billion settlement claims arising out of the 150 year Indian residential school tragedy. A dedicated and highly respected leader, Fontaine is committed to facilitating change and advancement for First Nations people.

“Harrison Pensa is very proud to partner with Western Law to bring the Claude and Elaine Pensa Lecture in Human Rights to our community,” says Geoff Pulford, CEO of Harrison Pensa. “Through a greater understanding about human rights we learn about respect, fairness, justice and equality. This public lecture provides an important reminder that human rights are an important part of our individual status as human beings and our collective status as members of the global community.”

The Claude and Elaine Pensa Lecture in Human Rights at Western was established in 2006. It honours not only Claude Pensa's longstanding career but also the commitment he and his late wife, Elaine, shared in the area of human rights. Claude Pensa is Counsel to Harrison Pensa, a major Southwestern Ontario law firm, where he continues to practise principally litigation and administrative law.

The inaugural Pensa Lecture was delivered by Michael Ignatieff, leader of the federal Liberal Party, on the topic “Speaking Up for Human Rights: The Canadian Challenge.” Other speakers in the series include: Supreme Court Justice Ian Binnie; Justice Richard Goldstone, former Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda; and Philippe Sands, a Professor of international law at University College London.
