Take a pictorial tour of Brescia University College's 90-year history as part of The Circle Women's Centre Sophia Series held on Wednesday, Jan. 27.

The audience at "An Illustrated Herstory Tour for St. Angela Merici" is assured a few surprises when Professor Emerita Patricia Skidmore-Skuce returns to Brescia to give a pictorial tour of Brescia’s history, guided by founding Ursuline St. Angela Merici.

The tour begins at 7:30 p.m. and is held in celebration of Brescia’s 90th anniversary. The event takes place in the St. James Building Auditorium. Parking is free.

Since its inception, Brescia’s community has embraced and encouraged the education of women, social justice, and community service. The Sophia Series is designed to educate audiences about the depth and richness of women’s wisdom.

St. Angela (1474-1540) has been described as “a sage and a searcher” by Sister Frances Ryan, co-ordinator of the Department of French. St. Angela established the Order of St. Ursula in 1535 at a time when women were not encouraged to lead. Her wisdom has long been revered at Brescia and inspired the Ursuline Sisters to establish Canada’s only women’s university in 1919.

Skidmore-Skuce taught history at Brescia for nearly 40 years (1970-2008). Her students explored the history of England, Europe, and Canada, oral history and the history of women. Skidmore-Skuce has said she had the most fun sharing historical tales of Brescia itself, which she captured in two books published in 1980 and 2007 respectively.
