The University of Western Ontario has reached a tentative agreement with the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 772 avoiding a possible labour disruption.

The deal was ratified by the 10 members of Local 772 who fulfill the important role of running the steam plant that produces heat and cooling for both Western and University Hospital.

Western’s Board of Governors must now approve the agreement at their next meeting.

The IUOE and the University have been negotiating a new collective agreement since July to replace the previous four-year contract that expired on June 30, 2008.

Local 772 was in a legal strike position as of Tuesday, December 16 at 12:01 a.m.
