CHRW - Radio Western 94.7FM - is the year 2000 recipient of the Fred Sgambati Award from the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union.

The award is presented annually to a member of the news media who has made a significant contribution to the development and growth of Canadian university sport.

For the past 20 years, CHRW "The Voice of the Mustangs" has been doing just that. This student run radio station has done over 700 live broadcasts, traveling coast-to-coast to bring the University of Western Ontario fans in London the best in Mustang Athletics. CHRW was the first campus radio station to broadcast the Vanier Cup, when they went live with the Canadian university football championship in 1986. They also air a weekly sports show, "From the Cheap Seats" which gets you up close and personal with the student-athletes, coaches and fans of Western's varsity teams.

"These students put in the extra effort and definitely go beyond the call of duty," explained outgoing Association of Canadian University Sports Information Directors president David Kent. "CHRW is tenacious, cutting edge and one of the most professional media sources out there today."

This is the first time in the 25-year history of the Fred Sgambati Award that it has gone to a "media team", rather than to an individual writer or reporter. Some members of that former CHRW team include Elliotte Friedman(Headline Sports), Damian Goddard (CTV Sportsnet) and Dan Shulman (Toronto Blue Jays Baseball).

"Congratulations to CHRW - Radio Western," says Darwin Semotiuk, chair of Intercollegiate Athletics at Western. "It is a well-deserved honor and represents the first time that the CIAU has recognized a student-based organization. Once again, Western has led the way."
