A University of Western Ontario associate professor is hoping to change attitudes towards Canadian music, one audience at a time.

For nearly 20 years Don Wright Faculty of Music associate professor Gwen Beamish has been promoting Canadian composers and hosting concerts to change such opinions.

The annual Celebrating Canadian Music concert will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 12:30 p.m. in von Kuster Hall and will feature her daughter, Robin MacMillan. The event is free and open to the public.

A Western alumna, MacMillan has gone on to a rewarding career as a collaborative pianist, vocal coach, oboist, and English horn player. After spending 15 years working in Vienna, she now calls Winnipeg home where she plays for the Winnipeg Symphony, Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, and Musick Barock.

Joining MacMillan and Beamish are Faculty of Music colleagues Shawn Spicer (trumpet) and Sherry Steele (soprano) performing Intrada (Ruth Watson Henderson), Elegy (Michael Conway Baker), Short Story (Harry Freedman), Memories in an Ancient Garden (Alexina Louie), and Fantasy on English Folksongs (Christopher Palmer).

"People will hear a variety of moods and characters," said Beamish. "The music is quite enjoyable.”
