Canadian Guitar Quartet returns
Wednesday, November 19, 2008
Recognized as one of the best in the world, the Canadian Guitar Quartet (CGQ) returns to The University of Western Ontario to perform a free concert on Friday, Nov. 21.
Patrons are encouraged to arrive early for the 12:30 p.m. concert in von Kuster Hall.
The CGQ performs music from a variety of genres, with all of their works arranged or composed by its members. The players’ virtuosity, combined with their compositional talents, makes for drama and excitement onstage.

Philip Candelaria, Denis Donegani, Patrick Roux, and Louis Trépanier are featured regularly on both the English and French national CBC networks. As of 2003, the CGQ has been in residence at the University of Ottawa.
An arrangement of the well-known William Tell Overture will round out three original compositions on the program: Cuerda pa‘ rato (L. Trépanier); Comme un tango (P. Roux) ; and Concerto Tradicionuevo (P. Roux).
Last heard at Western in 2006, the CGQ has been busily working on the G8 Project: a guitar octet in collaboration with the Salzburg Guitar Quartet. G8 has delighted audiences to critical acclaim in Austria, Germany, and Canada, and plan to tour Europe and Canada in 2009.
The CGQ one of the greatest New York City debuts of any artistic ensemble in decades with the 92nd Street Y’s 2007 “Art of the Guitar” series.
Candelaria will make a special appearance on Thursday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. to offer his advice to five of Western’s current guitar students. Those interested in watching this masterclass can contact Professor Wilma van Berkel at wvanber@uwo.ca.
The cost to attend the masterclass is $10 and it will be held in the Music Building Room 345.
