Brescia University College students are sharing warmth and compassion with their community this winter through a series of events planned as part of the new Exploring Leadership course to collect money and other necessary gifts for charitable organizations.

This week, first-year student Meagan Zettler and her group will host “Brescia Movie Mania” on Thursday, Feb. 4 from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. in the Auditorium in support of the Rotholme Women’s and Family Shelter and the Men’s Missions and Rehabilitation Centre of the Mission Services of London.

The $5 ticket price includes free popcorn and two movies, Zombieland and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. There will also be a small silent auction with gift baskets from places like Angelo’s Bakery and Tim Horton’s. Cash donations or gently used clothing will be accepted as well.

As part of the new Exploring Leadership 1031 course at Brescia, students were encouraged to form small groups to lead a community event and present the strategy, results of the activity, and lessons learned.

Eight projects are being organized by student groups in the class, including toy drives, “Adopt a family for Christmas,” and a self-defense workshop for women.

“We have all definitely grown as people. Regardless of how the event turns out, we have all changed as leaders. That’s what this course is all about, ” Zettler says.

Brescia has a long history of developing women leaders. Its founders – the Ursuline Sisters – were front runners in developing leadership among women. Brescia continues this tradition through its ongoing focus of educating women and providing students with leadership opportunities through their educational experience.

Principal Colleen Hanycz says, “To see this form of service leadership at Brescia is very exciting. You cannot imagine how proud I am to be associated with these ‘leadership labs’ for our students and for the broader community.”
