Big week ahead for musical events

The Don Wright Faculty of Music is really turning up the volume this coming week with a packed schedule of musical performances by students and professionals certain to wear out even the most intrepid fans.
The
excitement begins tonight (Friday night) with the inaugural Fred Pattison Piano Competition finals
at 8 p.m. in von Kuster Hall. A new $4,500 award is being made possible through
a donation by Fred Pattison, former chair of Chemistry (1959-1965) and Director
of Student Health Services (1973-1988). Click here to get more information.
On
Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 8 p.m. in von Kuster Hall there’s a presentation by the
London group Troifus, featuring clarinetist Robert Riseling (Professor
Emeritus), pianist Mark Payne (UWOpera coach) and bassoonist David Haward
(Orchestra London bassoonist). Get more information about the group here.
Not
to be missed is the Mozart Opera Gala Feb. 6 & 7 at Windermere on the
Mount. The gala will feature members of the UWOpera Workshop directed by
Theodore Baerg and the Opera Orchestra, conducted by James McKay. The program
will include arias, duets, and ensembles from Le nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte, andCosi fan tutte.

On
Friday, Feb. 6 at 12:30 p.m. in von Kuster Hall, check out the True North
Brass, this year’s artists in residence. The quintet has established itself in
less than 10 years as one of Canada's most heard and most refined chamber ensembles.
A large audience is expected so doors will open early - 12:15. The Brass will also be presenting masterclasses. Both
trumpeters are Western Music grads.
A
few hours later -- on Friday, Feb. 6, at
8 p.m. in the Grad Club at Middlesex College -- the Jazz Band performs with special
guests including singers, a french horn, and jazz violin. Ben Sajo's
(BMus’ 09) "Breakfast" will be premiered.
Then
welcome the weekend on Saturday, Feb. 7, at 1 p.m. in the Music Building Room
345 with the Peter Longworth Chamber Music Masterclass. Longworth is a member
of one of Canada’s greatest chamber groups, the Duke Trio.
