Absences due to flu-like illness stable on campus
Friday, November 6, 2009
Data collected through Western's online absence reporting tools indicates that the number of students and employees staying home due to flu-like illness is stable.
"We've been closely monitoring student and employee absences since early October, and we are not seeing any significant spike in the numbers of those self-reporting flu-like illness so far," says Gitta Kulczycki, Vice-President (Resources and Operations) and chair of the university's Emergency Operations Control Group.
"It appears the measures people are taking across campus to minimize the possibility of infection are making a difference, and we encourage everyone to continue with good hygiene practices, such as regular hand-washing and use of hand sanitizer, and coughing or sneezing into your sleeve."
Director of Student Health Services, Shelagh Bantock, says several vaccination clinics are tentatively scheduled to occur on campus later in November, but that specific dates, times and venues will not be publicized until an adequate inventory of the vaccine has been confirmed through the Middlesex-London Health Unit.
The campus clinics, once scheduled, will be open to all Western students, staff and faculty, as well as the broader London community, who meet the criteria outlined by the Middlesex-London Health Unit.
