'Phishing' season opens - protect yourself
Friday, August 29, 2008
Last week 19 members of Western's campus community fell victim to a new round of phishing attacks, adding to well over 100 members that had already been tricked into responding over the past three months.
Phishing is a form of online identity theft that employs a variety of increasingly sophisticated techniques in order to steal personal identity data. In these recent cases individuals were convinced to share their Western login information.
“Western and other reputable organizations will not ask for ID/password information to be sent by email”, says ITS Director, Debbie Jones.
Jones stresses how important it is that all faculty, staff and students be aware of these attempts to gain personal information and stay vigilant against giving out this information.
