Academically qualified international students will have an extended opportunity to gain English proficiency and cultural competence for success when Western University opens its English Language Centre later this year.

Western President Amit Chakma and academic leaders will formally launch the English Language Centre at the Faculty of Education on Monday, January 28. The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Faculty of Education's Community Room (1137 Western Road).

"Western University is committed to growing its cohort of academically qualified international students," says President Chakma. "The English Language Centre will give those students a wonderful opportunity to hone their language skills in preparation for their academic programs while being fully immersed in the best student experience here at Western."

"Many of our students will hold conditional or unconditional offers to enroll at Western," says Matt Bazely, Administrative Director of the English Language Centre. "Our language students will fully engage in the Western experience, interact with other students and have access to many of Western's services, including residential living, libraries, computer facilities and health care. This program is all about ensuring student success."

Facilitated by Western's Faculty of Education, under the academic direction of renowned psycholinguistic researcher Stephen Bird, the program will send more than 150 students to programs on Western's main campus and its affiliated colleges over the next three years. Bird will work with academic colleagues, giving an extraordinary opportunity to conduct research on topics related to international education.

The English Language Centre is integral to Western's international strategy and will develop strong relationships, networks, and contacts within international markets, providing valuable resources to the entire Western community.
