Western astronomer and anthropologist debunk Mayan doomsday prediction
Thursday, December 6, 2012
Researchers
from Western University say we can't believe the hype about the Mayan
doomsday prediction and will share their views on the hot-button topic
at a public event next week.
Science Here and Now,
the free public lecture series offered by Western University’s Faculty
of Science and the London Public Library, promises to cover astronomical
catastrophes, separate truth from fiction and debunk many of the
prophetic claims made hundreds of years ago.
Linda
Howie, an anthropology professor, and Pauline Barmby, an astronomy
professor, will discuss in depth the global fascination with December
21, 2012, the doom-filled date when the ancient Mayan calendar finishes
its current cycle, triggering what believers trust will mark the end of
the world.
The event will take place Tuesday,
December 11 at Stevenson Hunt Room A, Central Branch, London Public
Library (251 Dundas Street) and runs from 7-9 p.m.
Media are advised that Howie and Barmby are also available for interviews.
