Goal-Breaking Donation to Cap United Way Campaign
Wednesday, January 20, 1999
The University community will be donating a goal-breaking $251,500 to the United Way of London and Middlesex when the agency caps its 1998 Campaign at a ceremony on campus this week.
Staff, faculty and students surpassed their fundraising goal of $250,000 this year and beat last year's total by almost $10,000.
"The University community has a proud tradition of supporting the human service needs of the London community through United Way," says Paul Davenport, president of UWO. "Our collective giving and volunteering places Western among the most generous workplaces in London. This year's achievement of more than $250,000 is an outstanding result and we owe tremendous thanks to all who gave and volunteered to organize the campaign."
Western's United Way contributions were raised through payroll deductions, a musical performathon, donation jars and a variety of special events.
The United Way Campaign closing ceremony will take place on Thursday, Jan. 21 at 2 p.m. in the atrium of the University Community Centre. Rick McCombie, chair of the United Way's 1998 campaign, will accept the University's contribution. Western's marching band and J.W. mascot will join the festivities.
