Western celebrates Yuri's Night
Thursday, April 1, 2010
Human spaceflight became a reality 49 years ago with the launch of a bell-shaped capsule, Vostok 1,carrying Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. While people today may be more familiar with the Space Shuttle, a celebration has built up around marking the first human to leave the bounds of Earth.Yuri’s Night, which began quietly in 2001 to mark the history of human space travel, has grown to more than 216 events in 47 countries – including Los Angeles, Stockholm, Antarctica, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, Houston, the International Space Station, and right here at Western.
The Centre for Planetary Science & Explorations will host a Yuri’s Night Space Party at the Grad Club, Friday, April 9 beginning at 8 p.m., followed on Monday, April 12 with the Space Exploration Speaker Series. From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the McKellar Room, Canadian Space Agency President Steve MacLean will discuss ‘Our future in space,’which will be followed by a panel discussion (3:30 to 5 p.m.) in the Biology & Geology Building (Room 0153) on the future of human space exploration, led by Canadian astronaut and Mechanical & Materials Engineering professor Bjarni Tryggvason. To close out the series, the community is invited to the Cronyn Observatory for star viewing 8-10 p.m. that night.
