Two London teachers receive lifetime honour
Wednesday, October 7, 2009
Two London teachers, nominated by their students for the Teachers' Wall of Fame award will be honored on Thursday, Oct. 8 at the Faculty of Education.
The honourees are Debbie Lukas, who retired from Medway High School in 2008, and Joanne Taylor, who teaches at Holy Family School.
The Teachers’ Wall of Fame, sponsored by the Faculty of Education at The University of Western Ontario and the London Public Library is a lifetime achievement award and was established to coincide with World Teachers’ Day celebrated in 172 countries around the world.
Lukas happily accepted the nickname her students gave her. “Mrs. Literacy” believes a teacher must “prepare the child for the path not the path for the child.” Her student nominator admires “her courage, her support and her optimism.”
Taylor believes that children need to be “nurtured, cared for, encouraged, supported and loved.”
Her nominators, on behalf of their Kindergarten children, praised Taylor saying, “This award may be a form of legacy, but the true legacy will carry on in the lives of those she taught.”
