Pillar Community Innovation Award finalists
Tuesday, November 3, 2009
On October 30, London's Pillar Nonprofit Network announced the finalists for the Pillar Community Innovation Awards. The awards celebrate individuals, businesses and government sector organizations that have made a difference in the community. The finalists include two with Western connections.
Advocacy through Action: Students Bringing Psychology to Our Community (Community Innovation Finalist)
The group consists of Western Clinical Psychology graduate students who, recognizing there was a need for access to and information about child, adult and family mental health services, developed a free annual lecture series for the community. Last year, the group was awarded the 2008 OPA Public Education Award by the Ontario Psychological Association (OPA). The Advocacy Through Action Group also actively participates in University-Community efforts to provide mental health services to Londoners who are disadvantaged and underserved.
Barb MacQuarrie (Community Leadership Finalist)
MacQuarrie is the Community Director of Western's Centre for Research and Education on Violence Against Women and Children. She is a past president of the London Coordinating Committee to End Woman Abuse and the Ontario Coalition of Rape Crisis Centres and has served as a board member for Across Languages and Margaret's Haven. In 2005, MacQuarrie received a Pride Award from the National Council of Women of Canada for her community work and her status as a single parent.
Recipients of the Pillar Community Innovation Awards will be announced at a gala on November 12 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at the London Convention Centre. Each will receive $2,500 directed to their registered charity of choice.
The night's keynote speaker is Dr. Pratima Bansal, Richard Ivey School of Business, who will talk about "What business and nonprofits can learn from each other."
