Hosted by Western's School of Occupational Therapy, the Going Back Home Exhibition explores the process of transformation within the Brazilian psychiatric context. Through black and white pictures, Brazilian photographer Radilson Carlos Gomes brings to light the experiences of psychiatric survivors who had been living in confined psychiatric wards for several decades and were finally released to their communities after the Mental Health Reform was signed in Brazil in 2001.

“They had to start from scratch: all of them with their particular timing needs. They had to learn how to take care of themselves, learn how to look both ways when crossing streets and try to safely arrive at the stores and ask what they needed. They had to learn how to deal with money: as they were illiterate they had difficulties with money values. They had to learn how not to be cheated when buying things and be careful with their bank accounts. That was a difficult and complex process…..” -  excerpt from Crossing Barriers (http://www.ccs.saude.gov.br/VPC/voltar2E.html)

The exhibition runs from October 28 to 30 in Room 1549 Elborn College (corner of Western and Sarnia Roads). The opening session takes place Wednesday, October 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served. The exhibit is open October 29 and 30, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. RSVP is not required.
